Claude Max gives you more usage per five-hour session than Pro, and that multiplier is the main thing you pay for. Max 5x costs $100 a month and includes five times the Pro plan’s per-session usage allowance; Max 20x costs $200 a month and twenty times — the Max plan article defines both. Pro costs $20 a month in the US.

All three have a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit that applies across all models. Claude Code draws from the same limits as the chat, per the Claude Code article.

Anthropic does not publish message counts for any plan: usage depends on your conversations, model and features — “so there’s no fixed message count”, the pricing page says.

What “5x” and “20x” actually measure

The multiplier is defined per session. The Max help article says Max 5x includes “five times the Pro plan’s per-session usage allowance” and Max 20x “20 times”, and the pricing FAQ says the same: 5x or 20x more usage per 5-hour session than Pro.

What Anthropic does not state is how the weekly limit scales. Max has a weekly limit that applies across all models, just like Pro, but no page we found gives its size relative to Pro’s. If someone quotes you an exact weekly figure or a number of messages per plan, it did not come from Anthropic’s published pages.

Two more things limit how literally you can read the multiplier:

  • Cost per message varies. The usage limits article lists what changes how much of the limit one message uses: message length, attachments, conversation length, tools, model, effort level, and multi-step tasks.
  • Anthropic reserves the right to limit usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, on both plans.

What Pro and Max have in common

  • Two limits. A session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit that resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, with your full weekly allowance each cycle. The limits explainer has the details, and when limits reset explains the clocks.
  • One pool for chat and code. Usage on claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit. Claude Code in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains IDEs counts toward the same limits too.
  • Usage credits. Both plans can keep working past a limit at standard API rates, up to a monthly spend limit you set, per the usage credits article.
  • Prepaid bundles. Bundles cut that rate: $50 for $45, $250 for $200, $1000 for $700, up to $2000 of discounted bundles per month on Pro and Max — prices from the bundles article.
  • Where you check. Both see session and weekly progress bars in Settings > Usage. See the usage walkthrough for the full walkthrough.

Where Max differs beyond the multiplier

Fable models. On Max, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are part of the plan, and you can spend up to 50% of your weekly usage limits on them at no extra cost, the Fable article says. They draw from the same weekly limit and use it faster than other models. On Pro, Fable isn’t included in the plan’s limits and runs only on usage credits. If Fable is your main model, this difference matters more than the session multiplier.

Output and priority. Max adds higher output limits for all tasks, per the pricing page. Its comparison table marks priority access at high traffic times for Max only, while the Pro help article lists priority access during high-traffic periods as a Pro benefit. The two pages disagree, and we could not confirm which one is current.

Monthly API credits. Max includes $100 or $200 a month in API credits for the Claude Platform. They can’t be used for interactive Claude Code, the Claude apps or extra usage, so they do not raise your chat or Claude Code limits. They do cover claude -p and the Agent SDK when you run them with an API key from your linked Console organization, the API credits article says.

Claude Code wrap-up. When Claude Code hits the five-hour limit mid-response, it may finish the current step. On Pro this happens up to once per weekly usage period, per the wrap-up article; on Max, each time you reach a five-hour limit within your weekly limit. It is still rolling out.

Billing. Max is monthly only. Upgrading to a higher tier is charged on a prorated basis, and if you move from annual Pro to Max, a remaining Pro balance larger than the Max price becomes account credit.

Claude Code on Pro and Max

Claude Code is included on both plans and shares their limits: all activity in both tools counts against the same limits. Long agentic sessions in the terminal eat into the same session and weekly budget you use for chat.

On May 6, 2026 Anthropic announced it was doubling Claude Code’s five-hour rate limits for Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans and dropping the peak-hours reduction on Claude Code for Pro and Max — see the May 2026 announcement.

On September 22, 2026 Anthropic said it was increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, Team and seat-based Enterprise plans again, without giving figures, in the Opus 5.5 announcement. The Claude Code limits guide keeps the full 2026 timeline.

The help center has not explained how that doubled figure combines with the shared pool, so we can’t tell you how much extra chat headroom it leaves.

Check that Claude Code is really using your plan: if ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is set in your environment, Claude Code uses the API key and bills API usage instead of your subscription. In Claude Code, /usage shows your plan limits — the commands reference covers it.

Team and Enterprise, for comparison

Plan Price (US) Usage Source
Team, Standard seat $25/member/month monthly, $20 annually 1.25x Pro per session, weekly limit across all models Team article
Team, Premium seat $125/member/month monthly, $100 annually 6.25x Pro per session, weekly limit across all models Team article
Enterprise (usage-based) $20/seat/month billed annually, 20-seat minimum, plus usage at API rates No plan or seat-level usage limits Enterprise article, Pricing

Team plans need at least two members and support up to 150 seats. Limits are per member, so one heavy user does not use up anyone else’s allowance.

How to choose with your own numbers

Anthropic’s own advice for Pro users is to consider Max 5x if you consistently hit limits, and Max 20x if you consistently hit limits on Max 5x. “Consistently” is the key word, and you can measure it:

  • You hit the session limit often, but the weekly bar has room. More per-session allowance is what you need, which is exactly what the Max multiplier is defined against.
  • You hit a limit only now and then. Usage credits on Pro may cost less than upgrading. Compare a month of credit spend with the gap between Pro at $20 and Max 5x at $100, and set a monthly spend limit first.
  • You want Fable as your daily model. On Pro every Fable request is billed as credits; on Max it is part of the plan.
  • You run Claude Code for hours. Watch both bars during a normal coding week before deciding, and note which one fills first.

To get those numbers without opening Settings after every task, Token Counter shows session and weekly usage side by side in a bar under the claude.ai message box, with Claude Code usage already counted. A week or two of watching it tells you which limit you actually run into.
