Job Tracker privacy policy
Last updated: October 21, 2026
Job Tracker is a browser extension that saves job postings to a board in your browser, where you track each application from Saved to Offer. The extension itself does not collect any data. This policy explains exactly what it does and why it asks for each permission.
What the extension collects
Nothing. Job Tracker has no accounts, no tracking and no analytics inside the extension, and it makes no network requests. The developer never receives the jobs you save or anything about your browsing.
When it reads a page
Job Tracker reads a page only when you ask it to: when you click its icon, press its keyboard shortcut (Alt+Shift+J by default) or choose one of its items in the right-click menu. It reads only the current tab, and only at that moment.
- Icon or shortcut. It reads the job details the site provides for search engines, or the page itself if there are none: job title, company, location and salary. You see these fields and can edit them before you click Save job.
- Save this job to Job Tracker (right-click on a page). It reads the page the same way and saves the job right away; you can edit it on the board.
- Save link to Job Tracker (right-click on a link). It reads the text and address of that link. If the link is an Apply button (Apply now, Easy Apply and similar), it also reads the page you are on, the same way as above, so the job is saved with its details. It never opens the linked page.
Job Tracker does not change the pages it reads.
What stays in your browser
Everything Job Tracker keeps is stored in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local):
- Your jobs: job title, company, location, salary, stage and your notes; the address of the job page and the site name; when you saved the job and last changed it; when it moved to each stage; and its place in the column.
- Settings: the version of the data format and whether you have closed the “How it works” tip.
- Rating prompt: the last 30 dates on which you saved, edited or moved a job (dates only); whether you have rated the extension; how many times you chose “Not now”; and until when the prompt is hidden.
None of this is synced or sent anywhere. It is deleted when you remove Job Tracker, so export a CSV file first if you want to keep your jobs. Files you export stay on your computer until you delete them.
Permissions, explained
- activeTab — lets Job Tracker read the current tab, but only after you click its icon, press its shortcut or choose its right-click menu item.
- scripting — runs a one-time script in that tab to read the job details. The script does not stay on the page and does not change it.
- contextMenus — adds Save this job to Job Tracker and Save link to Job Tracker to the right-click menu on websites, and Open board to the menu of the extension icon.
- storage — keeps your jobs, settings and the rating prompt state in your browser, as described above.
Job Tracker does not ask for access to any website and runs nothing on pages by itself.
Pages the extension opens
- When you install Job Tracker, it opens a welcome page with setup steps.
- When you remove it, Chrome opens a removal page that asks why you removed it.
- The board is a page inside the extension. It loads nothing from the internet.
- When you click a job's link on the board, the job's original page opens in a new tab.
- After you have used Job Tracker for a while, it may ask you to rate it. If you choose 4 or 5 stars, it opens the extension's reviews page in the Chrome Web Store. If you choose 1 to 3 stars, it opens a short feedback page. Your rating is not added to either address.
The welcome, removal and feedback pages are ordinary web pages hosted on GitHub Pages, and Google Fonts provides their typeface; both receive your IP address and basic browser details when a page loads. All three pages also carry a visit counter (Umami) that counts page views.
Answers you choose to send from the removal page (a reason and an optional comment) or from the feedback page (what should be better) go to the developer through Google Forms. Only what you pick and type is sent, and nothing is sent until you press Send feedback. Neither page asks for your email address.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this address with a new date above.
